German authorities deployed a bomb-disposal robot overnight on Wednesday after drone carrying explosives was found at Leipzig airport, a major logistics hub in eastern Germany and a base for Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines.
During the diversion of flights away from the airport, a DHL cargo plane that had been forced to abort its landing collided with an unknown object mid-air as it was climbing away from the airport.
The DHL plane later landed safely elsewhere and was found to have sustained minor damage.
“A drone carrying an unknown explosive device was spotted by an airport employee in the security area of the cargo operations zone near the south runway” of Leipzig-Halle Airport, a facility classed as critical infrastructure, authorities said.
