Randy Gardner will never forget the sight of his brother’s body after he was executed by firing squad.

Standing in the mortuary in Utah in 2010, he unzipped the black bag containing Ronnie Lee Gardner’s body and looked at four big holes in his sibling’s chest.

“It was disgusting,” Gardner told The i Paper in an interview. “It was horrific.”

What came next was arguably worse, when a post-mortem examination revealed that just one of the four bullets had grazed his heart, even though a target had been placed on it for the shooters who stood 20ft away.
