The Christian Brothers have, through a legal strategy described by a Circuit Court judge as “morally bankrupt”, placed survivors of clerical sexual abuse committed by some of its members in a position where their only means of attaining damages from the congregation is to be achieved by publishing the names of 341 former brothers in a national newspaper. With this strategy, the order has shown not only the primacy of the desire to preserve its assets, but also its complete contempt for these victims and for its own members who left the congregation in the years since the abuse took place.Should we really be allowing an organisation with such an obviously warped moral compass to own and set the ethos for almost 100 of our schools?
