—What happened. A wildfire near the railway to Machu Picchu forced Peru to suspend train service on the Ollantaytambo–Machu Picchu section on Tuesday 4 August 2026.

—Cause. The fire broke out around kilometre 107 of the route and sent rocks onto the tracks, making rail circulation unsafe.

—Disruption. At least ten scheduled train frequencies were cancelled, leaving hundreds of Peruvian and foreign tourists stranded in Cusco and the Sacred Valley.
