A long road trip subjects a car to a specific pattern of stress that everyday driving typically doesn't: sustained highway speeds for hours at a time, extended engine run time without the cool-down periods a normal commute provides, and, for many trips, unfamiliar roads and weather conditions with no easy access to a trusted mechanic if something goes wrong along the way. The checks in this list take a combined total of well under an hour for most vehicles and require no special tools beyond what most people already have or can access at a gas station, making the specific tradeoff — a modest amount of time spent before departure versus the cost, delay, and risk of a breakdown mid-trip — heavily favor doing the check regardless of how reliable the car has seemed recently.
