Troy Taormina / Imagn ImagesAug. 5, 2026 Updated 1:16 pm EDTHOUSTON — The Toronto Blue Jays’ endless year of injuries continues. Trey Yesavage, after leaving Tuesday’s game against the Houston Astros, was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with left knee inflammation.Yesavage felt “a pinch” in his left knee while warming up in the third inning, manager John Schneider said after the Jays lost 7-2 at Daikin Park, and went for an MRI.In corresponding moves, the Jays activated right-handed relievers Chase Lee and Lazaro Estrada and optioned right-handed reliever Chad Dallas, who threw three innings in relief of Yesavage on Tuesday.
The Jays’ rotation can handle an injury in the short term. They elected to go to a six-man rotation after acquiring José Soriano and Jameson Taillon at the trade deadline, so they can easily go back to a five-man unit.In the long-term picture, though, Yesavage is crucial to Toronto’s success. He burst onto the scene in the postseason last year, setting strikeout records in the World Series and entering 2026 as a key rotation piece. The righty missed the start of the season with a shoulder injury, but he has posted a 3.65 ERA in 18 starts since then.At 23, Yesavage is one of the young players Toronto wants to build around. But as with fellow cornerstone Addison Barger, Yesavage has been sidetracked by injuries.Even if the Jays have left the door open to compete for a postseason spot this year, their deadline moves were mostly about contending in 2027. Getting Yesavage healthy for next season will be a priority, so rushing him back to pitch again this year may not be a worthwhile gamble. This story will be updated.
