The overnight assault lasted around two hours, with Ukrainian officials saying Russia fired 24 ballistic missiles. At least 17 people were killed and dozens injured after Russia launched another large-scale missile and drone attack on Kyiv overnight, prompting Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy to renew his appeal for more air defence systems. As the bombardment intensified, Ukrainian authorities also ordered evacuations from the eastern city of Kramatorsk amid the growing Russian offensive. The overnight assault lasted around two hours, with Ukrainian officials saying Russia fired 24 ballistic missiles, four additional cruise missiles and 115 drones, many of them jet-powered and more difficult to intercept. Ukraine said its dwindling stock of Patriot missile interceptors left it unable to stop most of the incoming ballistic missiles.Zelenskyy said the attack struck civilian facilities, including a brewery, a construction materials warehouse and a postal sorting centre, although Russia claimed the sites were linked to Ukraine's military."Ballistic interceptors are what could have saved the lives of those killed today," Zelenskyy said on social media. "It is very important for our partners to understand that delays in supplying them, or a reluctance to hand over anti-ballistic systems, lead directly to such horrific casualties and destruction."Thursday was declared a day of mourning in the Kyiv region following the attack, which left at least 17 people dead and more than 40 others wounded. The latest strike comes as Ukraine continues to face a severe shortage of Patriot missiles. Zelenskyy has repeatedly urged allies, particularly the United States, to speed up deliveries or allow Ukraine to produce the ammunition domestically. He has also sought permission to use Elon Musk's Starlink satellite network to help guide long-range strikes against Russian missile launchers.Meanwhile, Ukraine stepped up its own long-range drone campaign inside Russia. Ukrainian drones struck a warehouse belonging to online retailer Wildberries in the Tula region, one of several facilities targeted in recent weeks. Kyiv claims such sites supply goods that can be used by the Russian military.Russia, in turn, said its air defences intercepted 475 Ukrainian drones across 16 regions overnight, as well as over Crimea and the Black Sea. Moscow also claimed it had struck logistics hubs, warehouses and distribution centres supporting Ukraine's military effort, including facilities allegedly storing drone components. As fighting intensifies, evacuations have begun in Kramatorsk, one of Ukraine's last major strongholds in the eastern Donetsk region, amid fears of further Russian advances and fresh attacks on civilian areas.
