The Erode District Handlooms Department will organise a series of programmes on August 7 to mark the 12th National Handloom Day.
Collector S. Kandasamy in a release said the National Handloom Day is observed every year to commemorate the launch of the Swadeshi Movement on August 7, 1905, and to highlight the contribution of the handloom sector to the country’s socio-economic development, while recognising the role of handloom weavers. The first National Handloom Day was celebrated in Chennai on August 7, 2015.
A fashion show and an awareness programme organised by the Department of Fashion Design of V.E.T. Arts and Science College, Thindal, will also be held on August 7 to promote handloom products. The Handlooms Department, in association with the Health and Family Welfare Department, will organise a special medical camp for weavers at Sri Kamatchiamman Thirumana Mahal, Mukasipidariyur, Chennimalai, on August 7.
A tree plantation drive will also be conducted at Mukasipidariyur and Melapalayam in Chennimalai as part of the celebrations, the Collector added.
