Parts of the city have been without water for extended periods
Areas that suffer from crippling water shortages and are forced to rely on water tankers in Durban are primarily located in the west and south of the city.
DA councillor Thabani Ndlovu said areas mainly in the south include Umbumbulu, Folweni, Mfume, eHlanzeni, and Umgababa, among others. These areas have gone for years without having water and are heavily reliant on water tankers.
"Many parts that are central would have water available for a day or two, and then the water would return. Areas such as Umlazi and parts of Ntuzuma do have water but experience frequent water outages. You could expect a water outage today and no water for several days," he said.
The municipality yesterday detailed the progress it is making to address some of the water challenges. It stated that progress is being made on the R1.2 billion Southern Aqueduct Upgrade in Chatsworth. Upon completion, the 24km bulk pipeline will significantly improve and stabilise water supply to communities in the southern parts of the city.
