RIYADH: Qatif’s central fish markets have witnessed heightened trading activity following the launch of the 2026 shrimp fishing season, with fresh shipments arriving daily at wholesale auctions and supply expected to surge in the coming weeks.
Shrimp remains one of the Kingdom’s most popular seafood choices, enjoying strong demand among Saudi and Gulf households year-round and taking center stage at dining tables during special occasions.
The Eastern Province branch of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture announced the opening of the shrimp fishing season in Saudi Arabian Gulf waters in early August, with the season scheduled to run through the end of January 2027.
The ministry said that the regulated season aimed to ensure sustainability, strengthen food security, protect marine stocks and support the local economy.
Logistical preparations at regional ports have been completed alongside efforts to accelerate the digital transformation of fishermen’s services. Comprehensive monitoring plans across ports, markets and supply chains have also been implemented to ensure product safety and quality.
