AI’s impact on wages is emerging unevenly across roles and skills.gettyFor years, warnings about AI have focused on job loss, reduced hiring and the possibility that entire occupations could disappear. The headlines are filled with questions like: Will entire roles vanish? Which occupations are most exposed? But early research suggests AI’s impact on wages could appear before it shows up in unemployment figures. Research from Apollo Global Management showed that real wage growth in occupations with high observed AI use lagged less-exposed occupations by 6.7 percentage points after 2023. Yet the researchers found no statistically significant decline in employment over the same period. They described the first measurable labor-market effect of AI as “wage compression rather than employment displacement.”A job can survive even as employers need less human expertise to complete parts of it. That can mean smaller pay raises, weaker bargaining power and slower earnings growth. It also raises a new question: Why is AI increasing the value of some roles while putting more pressure on the pay attached to others?AI’s Impact On Wages Is Already UnevenApollo measured observed use of Anthropic’s Claude across 321 U.S. occupations. Researchers identified 11 highly exposed occupations representing 5.8 million people, or 3.7% of the U.S. labor force. The five most exposed in Apollo’s sample were computer programmers, customer service representatives, data entry keyers, medical records specialists and the combined category of market research analysts and marketing specialists.The wage effect varied across both pay levels and occupation types:By wage quartile:Lowest-paid quartile: 10.7 percentage points slower wage growth Highest-paid quartile: no statistically significant effect By occupation type:Sales and office occupations: 7.3 points slower Management and professional occupations: 4.1 points slowerThe study covers a relatively small group and a short period after 2023, so the findings are early evidence. Even so, they show why pay growth deserves attention alongside AI layoffs and hiring trends.Starting Pay Is Falling In AI-Exposed CompaniesSeparate research summarized by IESE Business School points in the same direction. Using data from 138 million U.S. employees, researchers found that starting wages at AI-exposed companies fell 4.5% after ChatGPT’s launch. Junior starting pay declined 6.3%, and mid-level pay fell 5.9%, while senior compensation remained stable or increased.Those companies also reduced the share of new junior positions by 4% and increased mid-level hiring by roughly the same amount. As AI absorbs more standardized tasks, displaced junior candidates can end up competing for mid-level roles, increasing the supply of applicants and putting more pressure on starting pay.AI Can Reduce The Market Value Of Certain SkillsAI rarely affects every part of a job at once. Research from the National Bureau of Economic Research identified that tasks with greater AI exposure saw lower demand for the skills associated with them. A one-standard-deviation increase in task-level AI exposure reduced relative demand for those skills by about 2% over five years.That doesn’t automatically mean the position will disappear. Employees can shift toward duties that remain harder to automate, and companies using AI can still expand. The risk is that a role can remain intact while some of the skills inside it become less valuable in the labor market.Higher Productivity Doesn’t Mean Higher PayAI can help companies increase output, shorten turnaround times and reduce costs without adding employees. It can also allow businesses to combine responsibilities or raise performance expectations because assignments can be completed faster.Those productivity gains don’t automatically reach employees. A company can use the added capacity to increase revenue, improve margins or avoid hiring while keeping pay relatively flat. AI’s impact on wages depends partly on how much of the financial benefit employers share with the people producing it.AI Changes What Employers Are Willing To Pay ForPwC’s research takes the analysis one step further by looking at how AI reshapes the role itself. Its 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer analyzed more than one billion job advertisements across six continents. As the report puts it, “What matters is how automation reshapes the role.”PwC calls roles where AI increases the need for human expertise “Professionalised” and those where it reduces that need “Democratised.” Since 2021, advertised pay rose 37% for the first group, compared with 26% for the second. Job postings grew 39% and 17%, respectively.When AI Makes Human Expertise More ValuableAI can raise the value of a role when it handles routine duties and leaves the employee responsible for judgment, context, risk and accountability. The person’s value comes from deciding how AI should be used, evaluating its output and taking responsibility for the result.Experience becomes more valuable when a role depends on decisions without obvious answers. The harder it is to replace that judgment with technology or a less-experienced employee, the more likely an employer is to offer a pay premium.When AI Reduces The Expertise A Role RequiresThe opposite happens when AI performs more of the specialized duties itself. If the remaining responsibilities require less training or experience, more people may be qualified to do the job. That gives employers a larger candidate pool and less reason to offer higher pay.The position may still exist, but when fewer responsibilities require specialized knowledge, employees have less leverage to argue that the role deserves a pay premium.How To Protect Your Earning PowerStart by identifying which parts of your role are becoming easier to automate and which still depend on judgment, relationships, accountability and experience. A few things to track:Which skills are gaining value: Look for capabilities employers are requesting more often and paying more for.Whether your pay is keeping pace: Compare salary ranges, job postings and the responsibilities attached to similar roles.Where your expertise still matters most: Keep a record of decisions, problems solved and outcomes that depend on your judgment.Whether one person is absorbing several jobs: Notice when employers expect broader responsibilities without a matching increase in pay.There is a cost to waiting until displacement forces the decision. A Goldman Sachs analysis of 40 years of labor-market data found that people displaced by technology earned more than 3% less when they returned to employment. Their real earnings also grew nearly 10 percentage points more slowly over the following decade than for people who never lost their jobs. Those who retrained, however, experienced better wage growth and more stable employment.Tracking AI’s impact on wages in your field can help you see where your role is heading before your earning power declines.
