Peter Gill, acclaimed playwright and director, dies aged 86

Welsh playwright Peter Gill, whose intimate dramas and groundbreaking productions made him one of the defining figures of British theatre, passed away on Monday at the age of 86.

Born in Cardiff in 1939, Gill became one of the country’s most acclaimed theatre directors, as well as the author of several celebrated works, including “The York Realist” and “Small Change”.

Gill began his career as an actor at London’s Royal Court in 1958 at the age of 18. He later appeared with the Royal Shakespeare Company, playing Silvius in Michael Elliott’s celebrated production of “As You Like It”.
