Commonwealth Games swimmer Archie Goodburn broke down in tears during his appearance on BBC Breakfast this week.08:00, 05 Aug 2026Prime Minister Andy Burnham is set to meet with Archie Goodburn after his plea on BBC Breakfast.‌On Tuesday's show, BBC viewers saw the Commonwealth Games swimmer look directly down the lens while in tears as he issued a message to the new Prime Minister.‌At the time, he said: "Andy Burnham, if you believe and you want to make a change and difference to the future of our country and our young population, please listen to us."‌Since then, it seems as though the Prime Minister has listened to Archie's strong message as presenter Jon Kay revealed a huge update.Opening up the show on Wednesday (August 5), Jon commented: "The Prime Minister promises to meet with swimmer Archie Goodburn to talk about brain cancer research, 24/7 hours after Archie's emotional appeal here on breakfast."‌Sarah Campbell then clarified that the Prime Minister will be having a personal meeting with the swimmer after pleading for more money and resources to be put into brain cancer research.BBC viewers were reminded that Archie was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour two years ago when he was 22. Since then, he's been advocating for more to be done on the disease.Sarah Campbell shared that Andy Burnham has since replied to the video of Archie on social media, as she read it out for viewers at home.‌It stated: "Archie, thank you for this. I know how hard it must have been. What you're doing for other people, while you're going through all this yourself, shows the best of us."I'd really like to meet you and hear from you directly, and I've asked my team to get in touch."‌Later on in the programme, Archie was back on the show via videolink as he spoke about the last 24 hours and what is set to happen.He told Jon and Sarah: "It's been an absolute whirlwind 24 hours, and to hear that AndyBurnham has reached out and received our message on behalf of the whole community was a huge breath of fresh air for us.Article continues below"We feel like it's been a long time since we've been listened to from that level of government, and we're really looking forward to chatting with Andy Burnham in the future and seeing what kind of changes we can make."However, as the Prime Minister is currently on holiday, Archie shared that the meeting won't be happening for a few weeks.BBC Breakfast is available to watch weekdays on BBC One from 6am.
