A Muslim woman's firearm licence application was rejected, allegedly because she was wearing a hijab on her application photo.
Newly-appointed Western Cape police commissioner Lieutenant-General Sizakhele Dyantyi is expected to answer Parliamentary questions over the number of people who have been denied a firearm licenses because they were wearing religious headscarfs (hijab).
The questions are to be submitted by DA MP, Nicholas Gotsell, who serves on the Portfolio Committee on Police. This comes after Parow resident, Farzana Rahiman's firearm license application was allegedly because she was wearing a hijab in her application photograph.
Rahiman worked for 15 years as a social worker in the provincial government and now works for a local NGO in the same capacity, and became a victim of crime in recent years.
She applied for the license for personal protection.
