Amid heightened expectations, the maiden Budget of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led coalition government in Tamil Nadu headed by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will be presented in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday (August 5, 2026). Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson will present the State Budget for 2026-27 at 10 a.m. in the Assembly.Also read: Tamil Nadu budget: Ahead of TVK’s maiden budget, a primer on Tamil Nadu’s finances The TVK-led government had released a White Paper on the State’s finances flagging several shortcomings and irregularities in financial management under the previous regime. The White Paper said Tamil Nadu’s actual outstanding debt stood at ₹13.18 lakh crore, including the combined debt of public sector undertakings. It also flagged a “revenue collapse” and highlighted the declining share of the State’s Own Tax Revenue (SOTR) compared with that of several other States.Meanwhile, , leaders of political parties in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday (August 4, 2026) condemned as “political vendetta”, the arrest of former Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin in connection with a case pertaining to his alleged remark insulting the modesty of a woman. “The Assembly session, during which the State Budget is to be presented, begins on August 5. The government did not want the Leader of the Opposition, who enjoys a Cabinet rank, to be present in the House,” DMK president M.K.
