There is a particular kind of terror that people in Kherson have learned to live with. It buzzes overhead, watches, follows – and can choose exactly whom to strike. The footage shows 52-year-old Yuriy, a vegetable seller, running around his market van as an FPV drone pursues him. He ducks behind the vehicle. The drone changes direction. He moves again. It follows. Then it explodes. This was not a soldier running across a battlefield. Yuriy had arrived that morning with his wife to sell vegetables. “I only just put up the umbrella and started unloading the boxes,” he recalled from his hospital bed. “My wife was there, too. Then we heard it buzzing.” Yuriy survived. He was left with blast trauma, concussion and shrapnel wounds to his legs and back. His wife managed to escape unharmed. But what has shocked Ukrainians is not simply that another civilian was wounded. Unlike a distant missile fired toward a city, an FPV drone gives its operator a live view of what is happening below. The video appears to show the drone repeatedly tracking Yuriy as he tries to use his vehicle as a shield. That is what makes the footage so difficult to watch. The person controlling the drone could apparently see a man in civilian clothes, beside a vegetable stand, desperately trying to escape. “It is open steppe. There is nowhere to go,” Yuriy said. “It is terrifying, of course. Really terrifying.”
