Todd Blanche’s nomination for attorney general cleared a key hurdle Tuesday, setting the stage for new momentum at the Justice Department once he’s officially confirmed.
Now that the Senate Judiciary Committee advanced his nomination, he will face his final test to earn the job: earning the vote of nearly every Republican on the Senate floor.
That progress hit an early hiccup Tuesday night when Republican Sen. Susan Collins announced she will vote against Blanche’s confirmation.
Collins cited Blanche having “taken several actions that have further eroded the Department’s independence,” as her reason for opposing the nomination.
“While I believe Mr. Blanche is a capable lawyer, the Department of Justice has become increasingly political,” she said.
