The United States has revoked the visa of Brazil’s ambassador to Washington, a State Department official said on Tuesday, in the latest diplomatic row between the two countries.

Washington’s decision stems from Brasilia’s delay in approving a new US ambassador, according to the US official, who said: “We think the government of Brazil owes us a prompt and positive answer to our request.”

But the visa revocation does not mean Brazil’s envoy is being expelled from the United States.

“The visa of a senior diplomat here was revoked or canceled. That is not the same thing as kicking the person out of the country,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
