CALAPAN CITY, ORIENTAL MINDORO, Philippines — Environmental coalition Alyansa Tigil Mina (ATM) has welcomed the decision of the Sangguniang Bayan of San Fernando in Romblon province to recall its endorsement of Altai Philippines Mining Corporation’s (APMC) proposed mining operations in Barangay España, Sibuyan Island.
In a statement issued Tuesday (Aug. 4), ATM described the municipal council’s action as a “significant victory” for local communities that have consistently opposed mining activities on the island.
The group commended Sibuyan residents and local officials for what it called their “persistent and unwavering campaign” against the mining project, saying their collective efforts led to the withdrawal of the council’s support for APMC.
