Artificial intelligence has become one of the defining technologies of the 21st century.
Traditional cybercrime often relied on poorly written phishing emails or simple online scams. Artificial intelligence has changed the landscape entirely.
Criminal networks are now using AI to generate convincing emails, clone voices, create deepfake videos and build fake identities that can bypass verification systems. These tools allow criminals to operate at a scale that was previously impossible, targeting thousands of victims simultaneously while making scams appear more authentic.
The result is a shift from isolated incidents to what INTERPOL describes as an "industrialised, borderless ecosystem" of cybercrime. AI is helping criminals automate attacks, improve success rates and move stolen funds across borders before authorities can respond.
Africa's digital economy is growing rapidly. The continent recorded more than 1.1 billion mobile subscribers in 2025, with mobile banking, e-commerce and digital payments becoming part of everyday life. While this expansion has increased financial access, cybersecurity systems have not always kept pace.
