The best mattress toppers can be a panacea for all the tossing and turning that comes with bad sleep. They particularly come in handy when splurging on the best mattress isn’t in the cards, whether that’s because upgrading would be too expensive or because, logistically, your living space might not permit the coming and going of such large pieces of furniture. If you live in a tall walk-up building, a new mattress sounds like a good idea until you think of toting it up all those steps.

I found myself in a similar position recently. Moving into an older home that couldn’t fit the adjustable base of my SleepNumber ClimateCool — trust me, I tried every possible angle to get that thing up the stairs — I was forced to resort to my previous mattress that had been tossed aside because it’s far too firm for my liking. (I’m no fan of firm mattresses, but do know that many people prefer them.) It’s probably a familiar conundrum for anyone who’s sent a kid off to a college dorm. But there’s no reason to accept less-than-stellar sleep conditions.

To find a mattress topper that could make me forget about the mattress I otherwise hated, I tested five top-rated options, accounting for how they affected my sleep and the value they offered. Two mattress toppers outperformed the competition.
