Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Puerto Williams, the world's southernmost city, will open a 150-room luxury hotel in October as part of a strategy for Chile to establish itself as one of the main gateways for Antarctic tourism and position the town as an international destination.
The Cormorant at 55 South, developed by the Chilean Pivcevic family with Silversea Cruises, a Royal Caribbean Group company, required an investment of nearly $50 million and was designed primarily to accommodate passengers traveling on Antarctic expeditions, according to reports by Ex-Ante Chile.
Silversea Senior Director of Expeditions Ingrid Staudenmeyer said the initiative is intended to provide a more comfortable experience for travelers.
"Guests come to South America, and we fly them from southern Chile to Antarctica to begin the journey there," she said.
