Rheinmetall is expected to produce ammunition in Bulgaria after changes are made to the planned project, German Ambassador to Bulgaria H.E. Irene Maria Plank said in an interview with Dnevnik.
According to Plank, the delay in implementing the agreement announced by the Radev cabinet is linked to spending cuts included in Bulgaria’s 2026 Budget, as well as a request from the Bulgarian side to include an offset component in the contract.
The ambassador said that the recent meeting in Sofia between Prime Minister Alexander Pulev and Rheinmetall representative Pascal Schreyer had been planned in advance. The talks focused on establishing permanent communication channels between the German defense company and Bulgaria’s Ministry of Economy.
“It showed that the process works,” Plank said, adding that the discussions had confirmed progress on the project.
She explained that some adjustments to the agreement are expected, which she described as a natural development given changing global conditions and circumstances.
