New DelhiIndia’s civil aviation safety regulator has launched a detailed investigation into an incident in which an Air India Airbus A320neo operating from Phuket to Delhi experienced a sudden loss of altitude during cruise on Tuesday, leaving 13 passengers and four cabin crew members injured.According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Air India flight AI2379, operated by an Airbus A320neo aircraft (VT-EXO), experienced a momentary altitude variation during flight before stabilising and landing safely at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi, at 11:07 a.m.The aircraft was carrying 137 passengers, including three infants, and eight crew members comprising two pilots and six cabin crew.Precautionary measureFollowing the landing, medical teams attended to all passengers and crew members as a precautionary measure. A total of 13 passengers and four crew members sustained injuries during the incident.Later, five passengers were discharged, while the remaining injured passengers and crew members continued to receive treatment. The affected individuals are said to be stable and receiving appropriate medical care.According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), the aircraft has been moved to the hangar, and both the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) have been secured for detailed examination as part of the investigation.Besides, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu visited Fortis Hospital to enquire about the condition of the injured passengers and assure them of all necessary assistance.Regulatory proceduresIn a statement, an Air India spokesperson said: “In accordance with established safety and regulatory procedures, the relevant regulatory authorities have been informed.”“Air India is fully cooperating with the investigation and the aircraft manufacturer has also been notified,” the spokesperson added.The carrier added that its teams remain at the hospitals and are in constant contact with the affected passengers and crew members to provide all necessary assistance.Published on August 4, 2026
