Airline major IndiGo marked its 20th anniversary on Tuesday with a formal leadership transition happening a day prior, as Co-founder Rahul Bhatia handed over the baton to newly appointed Chief Executive Officer Willie Walsh.In separate messages to employees on the anniversary, both executives outlined a vision centred on international expansion and India’s emergence as a global aviation hub.Addressing employees, Bhatia said IndiGo had been built on the belief that India deserved an airline defined by reliability, affordability and operational excellence.“This milestone belongs to every member of our airline family,” he said, adding that the airline’s pilots, cabin crew, engineers, airport teams, operations staff and corporate employees had built much more than the country’s largest airline.According to Bhatia, IndiGo’s journey has remained closely linked with India’s own economic transformation, with the airline helping connect people, businesses and communities while contributing to the country’s emergence as one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.He further said India was destined to become one of the world’s major aviation hubs and expressed confidence that the airline would continue playing an important role in that journey.“As we celebrate the achievements of the past twenty years, we are equally excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. The next chapter promises even greater growth, greater innovation and greater global relevance,” Bhatia said.Besides thanking employees for their contribution, Bhatia formally welcomed Walsh as the airline’s new Chief Executive Officer, describing him as one of the aviation industry’s most respected leaders with decades of international experience.“I have every confidence that, with your continued support and dedication, he will lead our airline to even greater heights in the years ahead,” he said.In his first town hall address after taking charge, Walsh described IndiGo as one of the world’s most respected airlines and said its success had been built on a clear strategy, operational discipline and a culture focused on consistency.Furthermore, Walsh said that IndiGo had transformed air travel in India by making flying accessible to millions while connecting businesses and communities across the country and internationally.In addition, he noted that building a successful airline remained one of the aviation industry’s most difficult achievements.“Many have tried and few actually succeed. In the last 10 years alone, 408 airlines have failed. So what you have achieved is absolutely remarkable,” Walsh said.Additionally, he said the airline’s next phase of growth would be driven by fleet expansion and a larger international network, enabling IndiGo to connect India with more destinations worldwide.Walsh expressed confidence that India’s aviation sector still had significant growth potential.“India’s aviation story is still unfolding and I firmly believe its greatest opportunities lie ahead,” Walsh said, adding that the country’s scale, economic momentum and favourable geographic position placed it in a strong position to emerge as a leading global aviation hub.Walsh added that IndiGo was well positioned to lead that transformation while further strengthening its standing as one of the world’s most respected airlines.Published on August 4, 2026
