Residents of Sevandhi Pillaiyar Koil Street in Woraiyur, Tiruchi, have been facing hardship due to delays in the construction of a stormwater drain. Although the road was dug up around 10 days ago for the project, the pace of work has remained slow, causing inconvenience to residents.The dug-up road has made it difficult for people to step out of their homes and carry out their daily activities. Senior citizens and schoolchildren are among those worst affected as navigating the dug-up stretch has become unsafe.The street had been without a stormwater drain for several years and the project was taken up under the Corporation’s budget allocation for the construction of new stormwater drains. The work covers a 120-metre stretch of Sevandhi Pillaiyar Koil Street and includes the construction of two culverts.Around 20 houses have been affected by the ongoing work. Residents said a trench about three-foot deep had been dug for the drain while the excavated sand had been left piled along the road, narrowing the carriageway and hampering vehicular movement.“The officials informed us that the debris would be removed within two days but it has remained on the road for more than a week,” said Basheer, a resident.Residents have urged the Corporation to remove the debris immediately and expedite the work on stormwater drain.Ward Councillor K. Suresh Kumar said the work was in progress and assured that the debris would be cleared within a week. He said the entire project would be completed within 10 days.
