Image: Henrietta Hassinen / YleYle News15:12The Ministry of Finance has begun internal negotiations about Finland's 2027 state budget, with officials gathering in Moisniemi, Espoo, on Tuesday.The talks lay the groundwork for Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's (NCP) government's final budget ahead of the 2027 parliamentary election.According to Finance Minister Riikka Purra (Finns), the government is not planning any new spending cuts beyond the 4.8 billion euros already agreed, which will now be incorporated into next year's budget.Previously approved tax cuts for workers and businesses are also due to take effect next year.The budget has been improved by a long-awaited return of economic growth, which is already boosting tax revenues. According to Statistics Finland, the economy grew by 0.9 percent in the April–June quarter compared with the previous three months.Even so, Purra said the stronger economy will have little direct impact on next year's budget. It would, however, make the budget process itself easier and, as she put it, "more politically humane"."The state's finances are unfortunately in such chronically poor shape that even stronger economic growth has no significant impact," Purra said as she arrived for the meeting on Tuesday morning.She said that she expects next year's budget deficit to remain in line with the government's spring forecast, at around 13 billion euros.The government is due to negotiate the finance minister's budget proposal on 1–2 September.
