Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said Monday that a man from El Salvador died in detention at a US immigration prison accused of poor conditions, drawing calls for its closure from Democrats.
Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, 41, was detained by ICE on June 18 after the immigration force said he had “illegally reentered the US” after first coming to the country in 2006.

He was held at Delaney Hall Detention Facility in New Jersey before he suffered an unspecified “medical emergency” that led to his death on Saturday at University Hospital in Newark, ICE said in a statement.
The force said the cause of Lopez-Cornejo’s death was subject to “further medical examination.”
