Nothing proves that everything is fine like the media department of the biggest sporting governing body on the planet lurking in the replies of media outlets telling them that their stories are “pure fiction”. Fifa is in firefighting mode after its president was caught playing with matches and several gallons of crude oil.
If, as we are told, Donald Trump is prepared to go out to bat for Gianni Infantino it seems a fair bargain. Fifa’s president did back the US president’s politics, move a Fifa office into Trump’s building, overturn a red card and keep the actual World Cup trophy in the Oval Office. I’m just one autocratic leader, stood in front of another autocratic leader, asking him to get me out of a hole. We should hope that it does not work.
Today I feel… unemployed – that is the only appropriate ending here: righteous irony. Infantino has been humiliated, disgraced and exposed, but only through removing him entirely from this gross pantomime of his own creation can the most powerful governing body in sport move forward.
Infantino’s rotten core has infected his organisation. We can never believe that he will change, see the error of his ways and become a benevolent leader. You cannot clip Infantino’s wings. His ego and ambition will not sit snugly in a small box with a locked lid. As such, he must be removed from office immediately.
