This year’s trade deadline was headlined by the Los Angeles Dodgers acquiring two-time American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers, the Boston Red Sox landing Adley Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles and the San Diego Padres netting both Casey Mize from the Tigers and Robbie Ray from the San Francisco Giants.There were 17 teams that were buyers. The Toronto Blue Jays and Washington Nationals were the only two teams that both bought and sold. Eleven teams decided to just sell despite several of them being only a few games out of a wild-card berth.Below are my annual grades for how each team did at the deadline. This year, I decided to break them into three categories: Buyers, Bought and sold, and Sellers. Then, to add another wrinkle, I ranked the teams within the three categories.Without further ado, here are my trade deadline grades and rankings for all 30 teams:Buyers1. The Dodgers were the favorites to win their third straight title before the trade and now become even heavier favorites to achieve a three-peat. It was incredible they were able to consummate the deal two days before the deadline and didn’t have to add a fourth prospect in the trade.2. San Diego Padres Grade: AKey trades Acquired RHP Hunter Stratton from the Pirates for RHP Andrew Moore (Aug. 3)Acquired LHP Robbie Ray from the Giants for RHP Miguel Mendez and SS Joniel Hernandez (Aug. 3)Acquired RHP Casey Mize and INF Gage Workman from the Tigers for LHP Kash Mayfield and LHP Jackson Wolf (Aug. 3)Analysis: The Padres’ deadline reminded me of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” when the swordsman pulls the sword out and starts whipping and twirling it around, challenging the hero for several minutes. Then Indiana Jones looks at him, sighs, pulls out a gun and just shoots him. That’s what it felt like Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller did. He made no moves all week and then at the buzzer went and grabbed arguably the second- and third-best starting pitchers traded at the deadline in Mize and Ray.Preller has always been one of the best wheeler-dealers in the game and he proved it again, putting the Padres in strong position to get back to the playoffs as a wild-card team.3. (David Butler II / Imagn Images)Analysis: The Red Sox had a strong deadline even though they may have overpaid some in their two biggest trades. They still landed exactly what they needed to make their team better.Acquiring Mead gave them the right-handed power-hitting infielder they were looking for — it was just unfortunate he was injured in his first game with them. Trading for Rutschman could be a difference-making move for Boston both in the regular season and postseason. He’s a game-changing player and will help the middle of their lineup and defense behind the plate. Adding Miller to an already strong bullpen was also a smart play.I know many Red Sox fans who buy into prospects will be screaming about them trading so many big-name prospects, but several players that team president Craig Breslow traded have been over-hyped and over-ranked. In time, I believe Sox fans will be happy they landed Rutschman, especially if they can sign him long-term.4. Chicago Cubs Grade: A-Key tradesAcquired LHP David Peterson from the Mets for 1B Cole Mathis (June 25)Acquired RHP Aaron Civale from the Athletics for RHP Aiden Moffett (July 18)Acquired RHP Kevin Gausman from the Blue Jays for INF Ty Southisene and OF Brett Bateman (Aug. 2)Acquired LHP Braxton Garrett from the Marlins for 1B Jonathon Long and RHP Jace Beck (Aug. 3)Acquired RHP Ryan Zeferjahn from the Angels for C Moisés Ballesteros and RHP Mason McGwire (Aug. 3)Acquired RHP Clay Holmes and OF Tyrone Taylor from the Mets for 3B/SS Jefferson Rojas (Aug. 3)Analysis: Cubs president Jed Hoyer had one of his best trade deadlines. He improved the pitching staff significantly with the additions of starters Gausman and Holmes and relief arm Zeferjahn. Adding Taylor as a fourth outfielder who has speed and plays plus defense was an important depth play, as well. The deals have put them in position to make a run at the Brewers for the NL Central title and improved their chances of winning a postseason series.5. Philadelphia Phillies Grade: B+Key tradesAcquired OF Derek Hill and international bonus pool money from the White Sox for OF Dylan Campbell and INF Jose Colmenares (June 11)Acquired OF Kameron Misner from Royals for cash considerations (July 25)Acquired 2B Luis Arraez and RHP Caleb Kilian from the Giants for RHP Ramon Marquez and RHP Marty Gair (Aug. 3)Acquired LHP Brooks Raley from the Mets for RHP Luke Gabrysh and OF John Spikerman (Aug. 3) Acquired OF Colby Thomas from the Athletics for RHP Seth Johnson (Aug. 3) Acquired RHP Manuel Colon and cash from the Royals for RHP Nolan Hoffman (Aug. 3)Analysis: Phillies president Dave Dombrowski proved once again why he’s a future Hall of Famer. Even with a subpar farm system, he was able to add the pieces he needed to improve the Phillies’ chances for a postseason berth. Arraez will create traffic at the top of the order and turn some of Kyle Schwarber’s solo homers into two-run homers. The bullpen depth is much improved, as well, with the additions of Kilian and Raley.There is one potential red flag: all the position changes that will need to be made due to the addition of Arraez, who will play second base, moving Alec Bohm to first base, Bryson Stott to third base and Bryce Harper to right field. In theory, I don’t think it will be a problem but it’s worth monitoring.6. New York Yankees Grade: BKey tradesAcquired C Omar Alfonzo and OF Luis Cruz from the Pirates for RHP Camilo Doval and cash (Aug. 1)Acquired 1B Luis García Jr. from the Nationals for RHP Ben Grable, RHP Jack Cebert, RHP Jake Bird and RHP Yovanny Cruz (Aug. 2)Acquired OF Heliot Ramos from the Giants for LHP Henry Lalane and INF Kaeden Kent (Aug. 3)Analysis: The Yankees acquired one of the best hitters traded at the deadline in García, who is one of only two players in the majors with at least 20 doubles, five triples and 20 homers (Pete Crow-Armstrong is the other). García rakes against right-handed pitching, posting a .909 OPS against southpaws, and his power numbers should only increase playing half his games at Yankee Stadium. I didn’t love the positional fit but the bat was more important.New York also acquired the right-handed hitting Ramos, who is a below-average defender and can be pitched to. I thought they overpaid to get him, but he fit their strong need for a right-handed bat.7. Cleveland Guardians Grade: BKey tradesAcquired C Patrick Bailey from the Giants for the No. 29 pick in MLB Draft and LHP Matt Wilkinson (May 9)Acquired OF Blake Perkins and RHP Craig Yoho from the Brewers for RHP Codi Heuer and C Bo Naylor (Aug. 1) Acquired OF Jo Adell from the Angels for C Jacob Cozart (Aug. 3)Acquired LHP Foster Griffin from the Nationals for LHP Josh Hartle, LHP Will Dion, RHP Kendeglys Virguez and OF Nick Mitchell (Aug. 3)Acquired 1B Nathaniel Lowe from the Reds for RHP Alejandro Rivera (Aug. 3) Analysis: The Guardians did an excellent job acquiring yet another starting pitcher in Griffin, giving them by far the best rotation in the AL Central, which should improve their chances of catching the White Sox. I like that they finally added a power bat in Adell, although he’s a below-average defender and can be pitched to. Their focus on improving the bench by adding Perkins and Lowe was important, too.8. Tampa Bay Rays Grade: BKey tradesAcquired RHP Freddy Peralta from the Mets for INF Émilien Pitre, OF Aidan Smith and RHP Gary Gill Hill (Aug. 2)Acquired C/1B/DH Liam Hicks from the Marlins for INF Brayden Taylor, INF Adrian Santana and RHP Jacob Kisting (Aug. 3)Acquired RHP Tyler Wells from the Orioles for RHP Michael Forret (Aug. 3)Analysis: The Rays took a chance on Peralta, which makes sense considering how many pitchers their coaching and development group have improved over the years. Peralta finished in the top five in the National League Cy Young voting last year, but this year was awful for the Mets. Perhaps his struggles were mechanical or maybe he just couldn’t handle pitching in New York. However, if anyone can figure it out and get him back on track, it’s Tampa.I also liked their pickup of Hicks, who’s not a good defensive catcher but provides the offense, especially power, that the Rays desperately need from the position.9. Chicago White Sox Grade: BKey tradesAcquired RHP Luis Castillo from the Mariners for RHP Seranthony Domínguez, OF Nolan Jones and C/LF Boston Smith (Aug. 1) Acquired RHP Huascar Brazobán from the Mets for RHP Gabe Davis and RHP Zach Franklin (Aug. 2)Acquired OF Brenton Doyle from the Rockies for RHP Mason Adams and SS Carlos Vielma (Aug. 3)Acquired C Joey Bart from the Braves for RHP Duncan Davitt (Aug. 3)Analysis: The White Sox entered the trade deadline with five goals: they wanted to add a starter, a reliever, a center fielder and a catcher and they wanted to do it without giving up any of their top prospects. Check, check, check, check and check.General manager Chris Getz was willing to take on all of Castillo’s remaining contract ($30 million).They control him through 2027 and didn’t have to give up a top prospect. He acquired Brazobán, who has pitched really well using a heavy sinker and he isn’t eligible for free agency until after the 2029 season. Getz picked up another Gold Glove-caliber center fielder in Doyle, who can platoon with Tristan Peters. Getz also acquired a catcher in Bart, who will help fill the gap while Kyle Teel heals from his ankle injury.The White Sox improved the team while not sacrificing anything from the future and have a chance with these reinforcements to go last to first if they can hold off the rest of the division.10. Seattle Mariners Grade: BKey trades Acquired RHP Seranthony Domínguez, OF Nolan Jones and C/LF Boston Smith from the White Sox for RHP Luis Castillo (Aug. 1)Acquired OF Taylor Ward from the Orioles for RHP Alex Hoppe, RHP Harrison Kreiling and RHP Brock Moore (Aug. 3)Analysis: The Mariners were able to shed $30 million off their books by trading Castillo to the White Sox. The trade also eased the log jam Seattle had in their rotation, which was causing them to either piggyback starters or go with a six-man rotation. In addition to that depth at the major-league level, they have the best pitching prospect in baseball in Kade Anderson. He’s major-league ready and already better than Castillo, making this an easy trade to make.The Mariners added some offense with Ward, who hasn’t hit for as much power as he did last year but will still be a strong addition to their lineup. They badly needed another right-handed bat and he fits the bill. I also like that they acquired another reliever in Domínguez and added to their prospect cabinet with Smith, who walks and has great power.11. Atlanta Braves Grade: B-Key tradesAcquired C Joey Bart from the Pirates for RHP Hunter Stratton (June 19)Acquired OF Lane Thomas and LHP Bailey Falter from the Royals for LHP Carter Holton and RHP Lucas Braun (Aug. 1)Acquired RHP Tyler Mahle from the Giants for RHP Anthony Molina (Aug. 2)Acquired LHP Brent Suter from the Angels for INF Nacho Alvarez Jr. (Aug. 3)Acquired RHP Duncan Davitt from the White Sox for C Joey Bart (Aug. 3)Acquired RHP Tyler Uberstine from the Red Sox for OF Eli White (Aug. 3)Analysis: The Braves didn’t get the starting pitcher who can start a playoff game they were searching for, but did get quality depth for their roster. Mahle is a veteran and a solid back-of-the-rotation starter, Thomas is a fourth outfielder who rakes against left-handed pitching and can play all three outfield positions, and Suter gives them a funky lefty with a low arm angle and a much different look than the rest of their bullpen. It was a solid, not special, deadline for Atlanta.12. Milwaukee Brewers Grade: B-Key tradesAcquired RHP Lance McCullers Jr., LHP Colton Gordon and cash considerations from the Astros for OF Jadyn Fielder (July 15)Acquired RHP Codi Heuer and C Bo Naylor from the Guardians for OF Blake Perkins and RHP Craig Yoho (Aug. 1)Acquired RHP Dustin May and LHP JoJo Romero from the Cardinals for OF Alexander Frias and OF Josiah Ragsdale (Aug. 3)Acquired RHP Antonio Senzatela from the Rockies for LHP Mark Manfredi and INF Juan Martinez (Aug. 3)Analysis: The Brewers missed out on a lot of the top starting pitchers who were traded but they were still able to land May while also adding some bullpen depth with Senzatela and Romero. Naylor gives them catching depth.13. Pittsburgh Pirates Grade: B-Key tradesAcquired INF Jacob Gonzalez and LHP Brandon Eisert from the White Sox for the No. 34 pick in the MLB Draft and LHP Jaden Woods (July 10)Acquired RHP Ron Marinaccio from the Padres for cash considerations (July 23)Acquired RHP Camilo Doval and cash from the Yankees for C Omar Alfonzo and OF Luis Cruz (Aug. 1)Acquired RHP Andrew Moore from the Padres for RHP Hunter Stratton (Aug. 3) Acquired RHP Luke Weaver and cash from the Mets for SS Sammy Stafura (Aug. 3)Acquired RHP Kirby Yates from the Angels for RHP Kyle Robinson (Aug. 3)Acquired RHP Lake Bachar from the Marlins for RHP Brandon Bidois, INF Hyun Seung Lee and OF Brian Sanchez (Aug. 3)Analysis: The Pirates focused on improving their bullpen and they certainly took their shots with some high-risk, high-reward relievers like Doval and Yates. They balanced that with the acquisition of two steady relievers in Weaver and Bachar. They paid a high prospect price for the latter two, but in a year where they have a legitimate chance at a wild-card berth, it was worth paying that price.14. Minnesota Twins Grade: C+Key tradesAcquired RHP Tommy Nance from the Blue Jays for 3B Ryan Sprock and international bonus pool money (July 10)Acquired LHP A.J. Minter from the Mets for INF Bruin Agbayani and INF Billy Amick (July 31)Acquired RHP Dean Kremer from the Orioles for OF Jhomnardo Reyes (July 31)Acquired RHP Jeff Hoffman from the Blue Jays for LHP Dasan Hill, RHP John Klein and INF Dameury Pena (Aug. 3)Analysis: The Twins were determined to be buyers and they stuck to that, adding Kremer to the rotation and Hoffman, Nance and Minter to the bullpen. Last trade deadline they traded their entire bullpen; this year they did the opposite and totally revamped it.15. Texas Rangers Grade: C+Key tradesAcquired RHP Chase Silseth and C Logan O’Hoppe from the Angels for INF Angel Arredondo (July 29)Acquired LHP Adam Macko from the Blue Jays for INF Josh Smith and RHP Josh Stephan (Aug. 3)Analysis: The Rangers wanted to do what the Blue Jays did, which was buy and sell. At the end of the day, the exorbitant contracts and no-trade clauses for some of their veteran players forced them to do minimal buying and no selling. They did improve the bullpen with both Silseth and Macko. I really liked the Silseth/O’Hoppe deal, in particular. Arredondo is a fringe prospect at best and that trade was really lopsided in favor of the Rangers.16. Houston Astros Grade: C-Key tradesAcquired OF Jadyn Fielder from the Brewers for RHP Lance McCullers Jr., LHP Colton Gordon and cash considerations (July 15)Acquired RHP Max Martin from the Royals for RHP Nate Pearson (July 22)Acquired OF Daulton Varsho from the Blue Jays for RHP Spencer Arrighetti (Aug. 3)The Astros finally improved their outfield, picking up Varsho, who has won a Gold Glove and last year hit 20 homers with a .548 SLG. He’s having a down year on both sides of the ball, however. Houston has to hope a change of scenery gets him back to last year’s form, which should be reasonable considering he’s only 29.I was disappointed they didn’t get another starter. They came close to getting Foster Griffin from the Nationals but were outbid by the Guardians.17. Arizona Diamondbacks Grade: D+Key tradeAcquired OF Lars Nootbaar from the Cardinals for RHP Daniel Eagen, LHP Sandro Santana and a PTBNL (Aug. 3)Analysis: The trade deadline was a clunker for Arizona, who has been fighting all year with the Padres for second place in the NL West and for a wild-card berth. They had needs in the bullpen and for more offense, but were only able to land Nootbaar, who I’ve always thought of more as a fourth outfielder than as an everyday player.Bought and sold 1. They traded Gausman’s and Varsho’s expiring contracts but at the same time added a top-of-the-rotation starter in Soriano and a back-of-the-rotation starter in Arrighetti.I liked the pickup of Josh Smith, as well. He’s a gamer and will fit in well in the Blue Jays clubhouse.2. Washington Nationals Grade: BKey tradesAcquired LHP Connelly Early from Red Sox for INF Curtis Mead (July 25)Acquired RHP Ben Grable, RHP Jack Cebert, RHP Jake Bird and RHP Yovanny Cruz for 1B Luis García Jr. (Aug. 2)Acquired LHP Josh Hartle, LHP Will Dion, RHP Kendeglys Virguez and OF Nick Mitchell from the Guardians for LHP Foster Griffin (Aug. 3)Analysis: The Nationals made an excellent first deal when they landed Early from the Red Sox for Mead. Adding a young left-handed starter with under one year of service time who has already had success at the major-league level was a smart play for a team in desperate need of improving their pitching staff. It was a deal that improved the major-league rosters of both teams.They traded Griffin, an impending free agent, after they weren’t able to extend his contract, which they tried to do before making the deal. They did the right thing by moving him, landing four quality prospects from the loaded Guardians system.I hated to see them trade García, but they only controlled him one more year and to be able to get four pitchers back for him made sense. Grable was the headliner in that deal, with Cebert not far behind. In all, the Nats landed eight pitchers and an outfielder in what was an impressive deadline for Nationals president Paul Toboni.Sellers 1. They did the best they could with the return.I thought they got back exactly what they should have for both starters. From the return in the Skubal deal, I think Hope has a chance to be a 25 HR/25 SB player with All-Star potential and will fit in nicely with their young nucleus. Once healthy, Ryan can slide right into their rotation.For Mize, they got two of the Padres’ best starting pitching prospects, which was also a solid return. The Tigers should be competitive next season and put themselves in a strong position for the long-term.2. They got back three solid starting pitching prospects in Marquez, Lalane and Mendez and a solid, young middle infielder in Mayer. The sleeper acquisition was Hernandez, a 17-year-old shortstop who was in the Ray trade. He has all the tools to develop into a star-caliber player someday.3. Baltimore Orioles Grade: B+Key tradesAcquired C Jake Rogers from the Tigers for RHP Zane Barnhart (July 30) Acquired OF Jhomnardo Reyes from the Twins for RHP Dean Kremer (Aug. 1) Acquired RHP Alex Hoppe, RHP Harrison Kreiling and RHP Brock Moore from the Mariners for OF Taylor Ward (Aug. 3)Acquired RHP Michael Forret from the Rays for RHP Tyler Wells (Aug. 3)Acquired RHP Anthony Eyanson, C/OF Enddy Ozocar, C Carlos Narváez, RHP Kyson Witherspoon and a PTBNL from the Red Sox for C Adley Rutschman and C Jake Rogers (Aug. 3)Analysis: The Orioles said they were going to buy and sell at the deadline but that wasn’t the case — they just sold and did a really good job at that. They traded away Rutschman knowing they controlled him for only one more season and weren’t going to be able to sign him long-term. Instead of waiting until the offseason, they figured they’d get the best return now, and I think that was the right call if they weren’t going to extend him.The return they got from Boston was solid, acquiring three of Boston’s top five prospects, with Eyanson being the headliner.4. Although I didn’t like the Arredondo deal with the Rangers, I thought they did well in most of the trades they made.The best prospect they got was Nimmala, who profiles as an everyday shortstop, although I think he’s more of a bottom third of the lineup type. Ballesteros can really hit for power, especially against right-handed pitching. Cozart is a sleeper.5. They also decided to hold on to both of their catchers, Francisco Alvarez and Luis Torrens, which I think was the right decision.6. St. Louis Cardinals Grade: B-Key tradesAcquired OF Alexander Frias and OF Josiah Ragsdale from the Brewers for RHP Dustin May and LHP JoJo Romero (Aug. 3)Acquired LHP Caleb Ferguson from the Reds for international bonus pool money (Aug. 3)Acquired RHP Daniel Eagen, LHP Sandro Santana and a PTBNL from the Diamondbacks for OF Lars Nootbaar (Aug. 3)Analysis: The Cardinals’ best trade was the one they made with the Brewers that landed them both Ragsdale and Frias, which quickly improved their farm system. They also traded Nootbaar, which should open the door for top outfield prospect Joshua Baez to be promoted.St. Louis is building for the future and had little interest in trying to help this year’s team win over the last two months of the season, which was disappointing to me.7. The only significant players they traded were Hicks and Bachar. As usual, the Marlins did well in adding to their farm system, with Taylor being the headliner. However, I was hoping they would be buyers, as they still have a chance for a wild-card berth.8. Kansas City Royals Grade: CKey tradesAcquired RHP Nate Pearson from the Astros for RHP Max Martin (July 22)Acquired LHP Carter Holton and RHP Lucas Braun from the Braves for OF Lane Thomas and LHP Bailey Falter (Aug. 1)Acquired RHP Carlos Duran from the Dodgers for LHP Kris Bubic (Aug. 3)Acquired RHP Nolan Hoffman from Phillies for RHP Manuel Colon and cash (Aug. 3) Analysis: The Royals decided to hold on to both Michael Wacha and Seth Lugo, as both veterans are under team control beyond this season. The best player they traded was Thomas and they got a strong return back with Braun, who profiles as a mid-rotation starter. It’s been a disappointing season for the Royals and with little to sell at the deadline, they just weren’t able to help their future much.9. Colorado Rockies Grade: CKey tradesAcquired RHP Nick Frasso and OF Landyn Vidourek from the Dodgers for RHP Seth Halvorsen (July 20)Acquired RHP Mason Adams and SS Carlos Vielma from the White Sox for OF Brenton Doyle (Aug. 3)Acquired INF Connor Norby and RHP Aiden May from the Marlins for RHP Victor Vodnik (Aug. 3)Acquired LHP Mark Manfredi and INF Juan Martinez from the Brewers for RHP Antonio Senzatela (Aug. 3)Analysis: The Rockies didn’t have a lot to sell but they did move what they had in Senzatela, Doyle, Vodnik and Halvorsen. I thought they got strong returns in the Halvorsen and Senzatela deals. They did listen on their All-Star catcher Hunter Goodman but didn’t get overwhelmed enough to move him.10. I understand why they didn’t want to sell, as they are building for 2028 when they move to Las Vegas. I was just hoping they’d be able to make some trades to improve their future outlook and try to add more pitching but apparently weren’t able to find a way.11. They were nowhere to be found at the deadline. They didn’t buy. They didn’t sell. They just punted. Disappointing!
