South Korea’s state weather agency extended its highest-level heat warning across all of Seoul and additional parts of Gyeonggi and North Jeolla provinces on Tuesday, as extreme temperatures continue to grip the country. The Korea Meteorological Administration issued a severe heat wave warning for multiple regions, effective as of 11:00 am local time, for northeastern and northwestern Seoul; Goyang, Anseong, southern Paju, northeastern and northwestern Yongin, and southeastern Yeoju in Gyeonggi Province; and Jeonju in North Jeolla Province.Severe heat wave alerts are issued when the daytime high is expected to reach 39 degrees Celsius (102.2°F) or when the maximum heat index is forecast to exceed 38°C (100.4°F).The latest warning expands the areas under the highest-level alert, which had previously covered southwestern and southeastern Seoul; Hanam, Osan and western Yeoju in Gyeonggi Province; and parts of Gwangju and South Jeolla Province, including eastern Gwangju, Jangseong, Boseong, Yeosu, Suncheon, Gwangyang and Gokseong.The weather agency also issued standard heat wave warnings for a number of additional regions, including Siheung, Dongducheon, Suwon, Seongnam, Anyang, Gunpo and northeastern Paju in Gyeonggi Province; the lowlands of Pyeongchang and Inje and the mountainous areas of Inje in Gangwon Province; Geumsan and Yesan in South Chungcheong Province; Boeun, Danyang and Jeungpyeong in North Chungcheong Province; Mokpo in South Jeolla Province; the mid-mountain areas of Jeju City and western Seogwipo on Jeju Island; Yeongjong and southern Incheon; and northern Sejong City.A heat wave warning is issued when the maximum heat index is expected to remain at or above 35°C (95°F) for at least two consecutive days.By Choi Won-hyung, staff reporterPlease direct questions or comments to [english@hani.co.kr]
