Kenyan President William Ruto has renewed his call for faster economic transformation, stating that by following the route of South Korea and China, Kenya can go from a lower- to upper-middle-income economy.
In a post on X, Ruto stated that Kenya should not underestimate its potential, despite slipping behind economies with comparable levels of development.
“Transitioning Kenya from a lower-middle-income country to an upper-middle-income one is within our reach,” the Kenyan president stated.
“In the early 1960s, Kenya was at a similar level to South Korea, but today it is far ahead of us. China, too, was once behind us but today it is way ahead of us. Let us, therefore, believe in our nation’s potential,” he added.
The president’s words came just weeks after Kenya published an ambitious long-term development plan aiming at converting the country into an advanced economy within the next three decades.
