As inflation soars, Cape Town families are forced to cut back on essentials with many saying the cost of living is fast outpacing their income.
Civil action group STOP COCT said it had received several complaints from residents who were cutting back on food, electricity, healthcare, education and household repairs because their salaries were no longer covering their monthly expenses.
Its founder, Sandra Dickson, estimated that a household of two adults and two children in Cape Town would need a take-home income of between R45,000 and R55,000 a month to live comfortably.
“Residents are telling STOP COCT that their income no longer covers the full month. Families are buying less food, choosing cheaper and less nutritious products, reducing electricity use and postponing medical treatment, school expenses and household repairs,” Dickson said.
