Man charged in killing of kidnapped businessman shot in trunk

A Southern California man has been charged in the killing of a businessman who authorities believe was abducted from outside his home and fatally shot in the trunk of a car just moments after a police chase.The San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office on Aug. 3 charged Jianquan Bo, 66, with murder in the death of 60-year-old Shukur Aikebaer, who is believed to be a former business associate of Jianquan Bo's older brother.The charge stems from a July 29 attack that began with reports of gunfire and screaming in a neighborhood in Chino Hills, an upper-middle-class suburban community about 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.Authorities say that Jianquan Bo and his brother, Zhengfeng Bo, 67, shot and kidnapped Aikebaer outside his home after a power outage drew him from the residence. The brothers then led deputies on a high-speed chase for about 2 miles after authorities say they spotted their vehicle while responding to the call.The pursuit ended in a residential area, where the sheriff's department said Zhengfeng Bo opened the trunk and fatally shot Aikebaer before deputies opened fire, killing Zhengfeng Bo. Jianquan Bo was taken into custody."This was a calculated act of violence," San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said during a news conference on Aug. 3. "This quick response by our deputies to the Chino Hill station led to the suspects being located and the discovery of Mr. Shukur in the trunk of a vehicle."Jianquan Bo remained in custody without bail and was expected to be arraigned on Aug. 4, according to the sheriff's department and prosecutors. Prosecutors say the killing was committed during the commission of a kidnapping, a special-circumstance allegation that could make the case a potential capital prosecution.USA TODAY is working to reach an attorney who represents Bo.What happened during the Chino Hills pursuit?Deputies were dispatched at about 10:14 p.m. local time on July 29 to a neighborhood in Chino Hills after a caller reported hearing gunshots and someone screaming, the sheriff's department said in a news release.While responding, deputies spotted the suspect vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, according to the sheriff's department. Instead, the driver led deputies on a short pursuit that ended in a nearby residential neighborhood.Deputies then ordered both occupants to get out of the car, the sheriff's department said. The passenger, identified as Jianquan Bo, complied and was taken into custody.But the driver − identified as Zhengfeng Bo − got out of the car, walked to the trunk and shot a gun into it. At least one deputy then shot Bo, according to the sheriff's department.Deputies then found Aikebaer inside the trunk suffering from a gunshot wound. Both Aikebaer and Zhengfeng Bo died despite lifesaving measures.Power was interrupted at victim's home before alleged kidnapping, murderFurther investigation revealed that Aikebaer had been shot and kidnapped from his home before the pursuit, according to the sheriff's department.Investigators later learned that a power interruption occurred at Aikebaer's home shortly before the attack, the sheriff's department said. When he went outside to inspect the electrical panel, the department said that Zhengfeng and Jianquan Bo shot and abducted him.Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the power outage and whether it played a role in luring Aikebaer' outside. The sheriff's department also said that investigators served a search warrant at an Irvine home shared by the two brothers and recovered evidence during the operation.Authorities cite possible business dispute in caseAuthorities have not publicly identified a motive, but the sheriff's department said investigators learned that Zhengfeng Bo and Aikebaer "knew each other through a prior working relationship."San Bernardino County District Attorney Jason Anderson said the two men were connected through "business relations" and that some type of dispute may have developed before the killing. He added that investigators are examining whether disagreements involving business decisions or financial losses contributed to the events that unfolded."We allege that Mr. Bo knew exactly what the plan was when they went to the victim's home, what was going to be done, participated in what led up to the death of Mr. Shukur, and that's why we filed murder charges against the surviving suspect," Anderson said during the Aug. 3 news conference.
