Managing a collection of over 10 houseplants is rewarding, until you plan a getaway and realize you have no one to watch them.Asking a neighbour to tend to a full indoor jungle feels like a huge ask, but going sitterless doesn't mean leaving your greenery to wither. Over the years, I’ve refined a low-effort prep routine that successfully keeps every single pot in my home alive and well until I return. In fact, after my last trip, my spring onions had sprouted higher than ever! Whether you're heading off for a short weekend break or an extended summer vacation, here is the exact strategy I use to holiday-proof my entire collection without calling in favors.
1. Relocate and group your plants
Move your pots back from sunny window sills into the interior of the room. When plants receive less direct sunlight, their metabolism slows down, meaning they drink much less water. Grouping them close together also creates a microclimate: as water evaporates from the foliage and soil, it builds a localized moisture bubble of humidity that keeps all of them happier for longer.
2. Give them a thorough soak
Water your plants deeply until liquid runs freely out of the drainage holes at the bottom of the pots. Crucially, let the pots drain completely in the sink or tub before returning them to their saucers. You want fully saturated soil, not stagnant water that rots the roots.
