Nationals: D+Griffin was a coup for the Nationals, a guy who learned a lot in three seasons in Japan and turned himself into an All-Star after signing with Washington for one year and just $5.5 million. He was a model of high-level consistency, going 12-3 with a 3.06 ERA and using seven pitches to frustrate opponents, who hit just .226 with a .285 OBP off him.It’s discouraging that the Nationals, with a low payroll and almost no long-term commitments, didn’t sign him to a long-term contract. Instead, they’re content to take the win here, and from a big-picture standpoint, I get it: they found a low-cost gem in Griffin and spun him off for four prospects they evidently like. They keep building inventory for a better tomorrow, and Griffin is a rental.Still, the Nats didn’t get anybody who ranked among Keith Law’s top 17 prospects in Cleveland’s system before this season. (Lefty Josh Hardle had the highest ranking, at 18th.)
For the Guardians, it’s a brilliant move to bolster an area of strength. They now have the kind of rotation that could help them mount a deep playoff run (if they make it to October): AL strikeout leader Gavin Williams, lefty All-Stars Parker Messick and Griffin, and veteran Tanner Bibee, who has a 2.98 ERA in his last 10 starts.— Tyler KepnerNationals’ prospect haul represents quantity over qualityGuardians: C+ / B-
