ALLEN PARK, Mich. — It’s hard to think of a day Dan Campbell loves more than when the pads go on in training camp.When asked if he preferred these days more as a player than as a coach, the answer was easy.“Well, player,” the Detroit Lions coach said. “I mean, because you get to do it. Now you’re living through them. It’s still fun. Believe me, it is. But it’s not the same. But you also know if you go out there (as a coach), you’re just going to break — just break right in half.”Jokes aside, Campbell’s excitement was palpable Monday. He said the intensity rises on this day. He told his players that by the end of the week, they will begin to separate, and that this is when he’ll find out what kind of roster he has.Now that the dust has settled, here’s what we found out.Jahmyr Gibbs speaks … kind of During Sunday’s practice, Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs stood on the sidelines watching his teammates for the first time this training camp. A couple of reporters tried to flag him down for questions, but Gibbs didn’t comment on his ongoing contract extension talks.However, Gibbs took a few questions Monday. Gibbs seemed to indicate that he’d practice without an extension — or at least that it’s not the sole reason he’s sitting out. Campbell did tell reporters that Gibbs is dealing with a minor back issue, so maybe that’s factoring into his decision. It could be as simple as not wanting to agitate a nagging injury while he’s close to securing a new deal. Either way, credit to Gibbs for taking some time to talk. We’ll see how long this drags out.Ahmed Hassanein’s developmentIt’s hard not to notice — or hear — Ahmed Hassanein at training camp.At one point during Monday’s practice, Hassanein approached tight end Thomas Gordon, stared him down and unleashed a full-throated yell that could be heard from Ann Arbor. Gordon seemed to take it in stride, and this team knows how Hassanein is wired, so few batted an eye.
