Red Sox: AFirst, the easy part: this is a massive haul for the Orioles. Eyanson made Keith Law’s updated top 50, Witherspoon was a 2025 first-rounder, and Azocar is a teenager having a breakout season. It’s the kind of package that will make every Red Sox fan squirm.But it’s also the kind of trade-deadline deal the Red Sox haven’t made in more than a decade. Even when they’ve been in the playoff hunt, the Red Sox have lately settled for role players and rentals, which worked to supplement a loaded roster in 2018 but hasn’t worked since — and this year’s team needed far more than a platoon hitter or middle-inning reliever.The Red Sox took a massive swing by trading for a player who was supposed to be the cornerstone of a division rival and will instead fill a position where the Red Sox haven’t had an All-Star since Jason Varitek retired in 2011 (we’re not counting A.J. Pierzynski, who was well past his All-Star years when he arrived for a partial season in 2014). Rutschman has been an All-Star in three of five big league seasons, including this one, and despite missing time with several short-term injuries, he has again been one of the most valuable catchers in the sport this year. He has bounced back from a disappointing 2025 to post above-average offensive numbers to go with his usual strong defensive metrics. That’s a substantial upgrade over Narváez and Connor Wong, who have combined to perform at or below replacement level this season.
