New Delhi: The government has withdrawn or avoided filing thousands of tax appeals following an increase in monetary limits for departmental litigation, resulting in an estimated reduction of over ₹16,688 crore in disputed tax demand, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in a statement tabled in the Lok Sabha on Monday.The estimated reduction in disputed tax demand stood at: ₹3,662.82 crore at ITAT level, ₹9,218.71 crore at HC level and ₹3,807.15 crore at SC level.Following the revised limits, 443 cases before the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, 4,791 cases before HCs and 744 cases before the Supreme Court were withdrawn. In addition, appeals were not filed in 11,390 ITAT cases, 5,565 HC cases and 534 SC cases.

The government withdrew thousands of tax appeals after raising litigation limits. This action reduced disputed tax demand by over sixteen thousand six hundred eighty-eight crore rupees. Appeals were withdrawn from the ITAT, High Courts, and Supreme Court levels. Additionally, many new appeals were not filed by the department. This policy change significantly lowered the overall tax litigation burden.
