The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), on Monday, published the list of the top 100 property tax defaulters on its website, as part of efforts to improve tax collection.According to a press release, the property owners together owe ₹31.39 crore in pending property tax, with individual arrears ranging from ₹8 lakh to ₹4.80 crore.The GCC said property tax, its principal source of revenue, was used to fund civic infrastructure and essential services, including solid waste management, street lighting, maintenance of parks and roads, and public health and disease prevention programmes.The civic body said it has been undertaking various measures to recover outstanding dues from property owners, including issuing demand notices and affixing notices on buildings indicating pending tax arrears.As part of these efforts, the details of the 100 property owners with the highest outstanding dues have now been made available on the GCC website.The corporation urged property owners with pending dues to remit the outstanding property tax at the earliest to support the implementation of civic infrastructure projects and delivery of public services across the city, the release added.The list includes a range of entities, including private companies, educational institutions, hospitals, hotels, commercial establishments, apartment complexes, marriage halls, religious institutions, clubs, theatres, shopping complexes, and industrial units.
