San Diego, desperate for starting pitching and leaning heavily on an expanded bullpen, has carried a temporary two-man rotation of King and Walker Buehler while going 8-1 over the past nine games.The Giants will take half the money owed to Ray, including half of the $1 million assignment bonus. In return, they get Hernandez, a 17-year-old shortstop from Cuba who got a $1.4 million bonus in January, and Mendez, who was a top-5 prospect in the Padres’ system. Mendez is on the 40-man roster and has dealt with some shoulder issues but could impact the team next season.Ray is a 34-year-old well-traveled left-hander who had a career season in 2021 for the Toronto Blue Jays when he won a Cy Young Award after leading the American League in ERA (2.84 ERA) and strikeouts (248). He parlayed that season into a five-year, $115 million contract with the Seattle Mariners but gave them just one healthy season before he required a complete surgical reconstruction on his left arm to repair a torn flexor tendon and a torn ulnar collateral ligament.
