We’ll catch you up, but today — the final day of the deadline — should be a whirlwind. Follow every trade and rumor in our live blog all day long.I’m Levi Weaver — welcome to The Windup!Blockbuster: Skubal arrives in L.A.The Roman Empire did not necessarily need Assyria, nor did Pax Britannica hinge on the annexation of New Zealand. Alas, empires are not built on restraint or equanimity. So who did you expect would emerge with this deadline’s biggest treasure, if not the team already hoarding a mountain of gold?Yes, the inevitable Dodgers landed Tarik Skubal, adding to a rotation that, if/when healthy, will also feature Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Shohei Ohtani, Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow and — oh, by the way — All-Star Justin Wrobleski, not to mention depth options Roki Sasaki, Emmet Sheehan and Eric Lauer. (We’ll get to the lineup another time.)Skubal is expected to make his Dodgers debut tomorrow. In Detroit, the will-they-or-won’t-they question that lingered for months is now answered. The trade seals a feeling of incompleteness, says Tigers beat writer Cody Stavenhagen. There were other suitors, perhaps none more rumored in recent weeks than the Brewers. If L.A. truly needed Skubal for anything, it might have been to block a Milwaukee team hoping to avenge last year’s NLCS sweep from acquiring him. The old trope about the best offense being good defense is scalable, apparently. The players going back to Detroit in the trade — outfielder Zyhir Hope and right-handers River Ryan and Brady Smith — weren’t the Dodgers’ best prospects, but it wasn’t a bad haul with Skubal set for free agency this winter. Still, as Andy McCullough points out, the Brewers (and others) had the prospects to beat it. Yes, the Dodgers keep doing this. But also: Other teams keep not doing it. I’ll let Ken Rosenthal get into that in our next section.More Skubal:
