Authorities issued new evacuation orders for the village of Psatha near Porto Germeno west of Athens and another four areas Monday as a huge wildfire burning for a fourth day flared up anew, burning homes and threatening to spread further.
No injuries have been reported, but the fire has damaged dozens of homes.
So far more than 12,600 hectares of mostly forest land have been destroyed by the megafire that devastated one of the few remaining green areas close to the Greek capital.
The short-term outlook is unfavorable as for Tuesday the Greater Athens region and the surrounding area of Attica have been declared at a wildfire risk level of 4 on a 5-notch scale. The same will apply to the southern part of the island of Evia and the eastern Aegean Sea island of Chios.
New data showed that the strong north winds that blow every summer in the Aegean Sea hit record strengths at the end of July, whipping on the wildfires.
