The International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa (ITAC) said that following an investigation, they have decided to increase the customs duty on peanut butter from 0.99c/kg to 20%.
The International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) has recommended increasing the customs duty on imported peanut butter from 0.99 cents per kilogram to 20%.
The recommendation comes as local peanut butter producers face growing pressure from rising imports, higher production costs and declining sales.
It also follows an application by RCL Group Services (Pty) Ltd, which had requested an increase in the duty to 25%. ITAC’s investigation found that local production, sales volumes and capacity utilisation had declined, while imports had increased significantly.
According to ITAC, India remains the dominant source of imported peanut butter, with local producers facing ongoing price disadvantages compared with imported products.
