But as one exec, who spoke on the condition of anonymity so they could speak candidly about the Red Sox, said in a text, “That’s all I hear – Boston/SS.”What will the Los Angeles Angels do?Interim general manager John Mozeliak could be among the busiest execs in the final hours. Neto, starting pitchers José Soriano and Reid Detmers and outfielder Jo Adell are all in play. How far does Mozeliak want to strip the team down? How far will owner Arte Moreno let him go? Answers coming soon.How many more trades will the New York Mets make?Right-hander Freddy Peralta, righty reliever Huascar Brazobán and lefty reliever A.J. Minter are gone. Still on the “for sale” rack: Right-hander Clay Holmes, relievers Luke Weaver and Brooks Raley, outfielders Luis Robert Jr. and Tyrone Taylor — and maybe more.How much more will the New York Yankees do?Luis García Jr. is an imperfect positional fit but fills a need simply because he can hit — the Yankees lately are fielding lineups more suitable for split-squad exhibitions in spring training. A right-handed hitting catcher and bullpen help are still needed. The Yankees cleared out three depth-type relievers the past two days.What is Dealer Dave’s plan for the Philadelphia Phillies?Phillies lead exec Dave Dombrowski has demonstrated unusual patience — so far. The Phillies want an eighth-inning reliever (Jeff Hoffman?) and a right-handed hitting outfielder (Taylor Ward?) And Bryce “We need help” Harper is watching.What surprises does A.J. Preller have in store?Deadline day is Preller’s favorite holiday. His San Diego Padres are within one game of a wild-card spot. Preller seems unlikely to trade closer Mason Miller or even lefty reliever Adrian Morejon. His team is relying on its only reliable starter, Michael King, and a deep bullpen that allows for a pitching-chaos strategy. At minimum, Preller figures to come away with another starter and a left-handed hitting left fielder. Heaven knows what else he might pull off.Where are the Milwaukee Brewers?Catcher Bo Naylor and right-hander Codi Heuer can’t be it for the team with the best record in the National League. After striking out on Tarik Skubal, the Brewers need a playoff-caliber starter (the Mets’ Holmes?) as well as a power hitter, preferably at shortstop or third base. Sitting on perhaps the game’s best farm system, it would be inexcusable for the Brewers to settle for a series of piecemeal additions.What about the Tampa Bay Rays?What an escape from New York for Peralta, who might turn around his season working with Rays pitching coach Kyle Snyder and with the Tampa Bay defense getting to balls behind him. The Rays still could stand to add a catcher (Liam Hicks?) as well as a second baseman (Luis Arraez?) and bullpen help. They’ve got the best record in the American League and always are aggressive in their pursuits, even if they don’t often succeed.Where is the Atlanta Braves’ playoff starter?They’ve been trying to add one since the offseason. Tyler Mahle, acquired Sunday night from the San Francisco Giants, is not that guy. Soriano or Detmers could be, but even those two are not sure things — particularly Detmers, who already has nearly doubled his innings total from last season, when the Angels used him strictly as a reliever.Will the Orioles trade catcher Adley Rutschman?They’re at least entertaining the thought. But barring a monster return, moving on from Rutschman would be an admission of failure by president of baseball operations Mike Elias — not only in his selection of Rutschman over Bobby Witt Jr. with the first pick of the 2019 draft, but also in his overall rebuilding plan. Trading two potential free agents, left-hander Trevor Rogers and Ward, a left fielder, would be easier to sell.Can the Pittsburgh Pirates deliver?The Pirates have been engaged in some fanciful pursuits, even pondering a deal at one point for Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman, according to a person who spoke on the condition of anonymity so they could speak candidly about the team’s deliberations. But to this point, the only players the Pirates have acquired are infielder Jacob Gonzalez and reliever Camilo Doval. Not good enough.Will some team shock the industry by trading a starting pitcher thought to be off limits?Seattle Mariners’ George Kirby looked like he might be that guy, but his availability became public over the weekend. Plenty of rentals remain available, from the Mets’ Holmes to Baltimore’s Rogers, Detroit Tigers’ Casey Mize to Washington’s Griffin Foster to St. Louis Cardinals’ Dustin May. If some controllable Kirby-ish type starter gets traded out of nowhere, the day will get a considerable jolt.How much will the Texas Rangers sell?The Rangers, losers of five straight games and six of their last eight, are ruling nothing out. With a lockout looming, owner Ray Davis might look to cut additional payroll. Potential free-agent designated hitter Joc Pederson and reliever Jakob Junis are obvious choices to go. President of baseball operations Chris Young might get a lifetime contract from Davis if he finds a way to move on from one or more of his highest-paid players — Corey Seager, Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi.Can the San Francisco Giants move one of their big contracts?The Giants’ relatively inexperienced front office already is under plenty of scrutiny. An underwhelming trade deadline would only make the critical voices grow louder. The Giants have struggled to find a taker for first baseman Rafael Devers, shortstop Willy Adames or third baseman Matt Chapman. Arraez and lefty Robbie Ray, both on expiring contracts, seem certain to depart. Outfielder Heliot Ramos and lefty reliever Erik Miller also are trade candidates. But the Giants are drawing industry criticism for their high asking prices — “even more than the usual bitching,” said one rival exec, who spoke on the condition of anonymity so they could speak candidly about the Giants.Will the Dodgers acquire Yordan Alvarez?Just kidding, folks.
