TS Galaxy goakeeper Sipho Maseti, middle, looks stunned when he realised he handled the ball outside of his penalty against Siwelele FC.

TS Galaxy goalkeeper Sipho Maseti endured a night to forget against Siwelele FC, capping an eventful Betway Premiership opener with a bizarre straight red card in deep stoppage time.

With their opening match of the season tied at 2-2 in the closing moments at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein, Maseti gathered the ball with his hands outside the 18-yard box, mistakenly believing he was still safely within his penalty area.

The referee had no hesitation in issuing a direct red card for handling outside the box, leaving the Rockets reduced to 10 men.

It is understood the presence of faint rugby lines marked on the dual-purpose pitch may have contributed to Maseti’s costly spatial confusion. The Toyota Stadium is the home ground of the Free State Cheetahs, who have recently played Currie Cup matches at the venue.
