Senior Amazon engineers have discussed cases of “catastrophically expensive” cost overruns caused by mistakes in the company’s AI deployments and a lack of spending controls, the Financial Times reported.
The incidents, reportedly discussed at a staff meeting on 28 July, emphasise how even large, technologically sophisticated companies face difficulties in integrating AI into their workflows, amid soaring costs due to an industry shift to usage-based billing.
At the meeting, senior engineers said efforts to switch from a conventional programming approach to the use of AI models had, in some cases, led to “unplanned” spending, the FT report said, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter.
