Just like with humans, young puppies will need guidance and boundaries from you to learn what they can and cannot do - such as biting or chewing on things. To help dog owners understand why their puppies might start biting them or chewing on things they shouldn't, one experienced dog owner called Lily, who currently has seven dogs of her own, has explained light on why this occurs - and it's down to a common mistake many new dog owners tend to make. Why do puppies bite when you train them?"If there is one mistake, and one mistake only people make with their puppies, it is training them for too long," Lily said.Content cannot be displayed without consentShe continued by explaining that she'd just finished a ten-minute training session with her puppy, Goose, noting that before they began, the pup had simply been 'chilling' and running about the house."Now, as you can see, what we have right now is a very bitey puppy, a very annoying puppy, a puppy who is being very irritating, who is not listening, who is launching at me,biting at me, will not leave me alone," Lily said as the pup continued to bite her arm and hand. She went on to explain that as the puppy was beginning to disregard her commands, while she could simply ignore the behaviour, this would only result in the dog either carrying on attacking her or going off to pester one of the other dogs. Lily explained: "What is wrong right now is she's overtired and she's trained for a long time now.""People make the mistake of overly training with their dogs," she added.Due to the puppy's tender age, Lily said that she couldn't simply allow the pup to roam freely around the house, as she'd most likely end up finding something to gnaw on, whether that's a human or a piece of furniture, causing mayhem in the process."Very common in puppies. Um, but it's really unenjoyable, and it actually makes you think your puppy hates you because it really hurts," Lily said. How to get puppies to stop bitingWhile the pup will eventually settle down and calm herself, Lily said that there's a more effective way to handle it, and that's to ensure the puppy has a nap."Because this is a girly who is tired, who's used her brain lots. And now we have a dog who's having a temper tantrum and needs to go in for a sleep," Lily explained.According to the Dog's Trust, puppies that bite during or after training and play sessions are often doing so because they are overstimulated, exhausted, or getting confused between training treats and playtime.Article continues belowThe best way to address this is to halt the interaction straight away, steer them towards a suitable chew toy, and make sure they are getting plenty of enforced rest.
