Beijing is encouraging mainland financial firms to use the city to go global while it also encourages Hong Kong-listed companies to list on the mainland, China’s market regulator head said on Monday.“Mainland financial institutions have been using Hong Kong to go global. There are some domestic institutions that we cannot be seen in Beijing could be found in Hong Kong,” said Wu Qing, chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission at the launch ceremony of the five-year China government bond futures.“We would like to see more dual listings with mainland firms to raise funds in Hong Kong and encourage Hong Kong firms to list in China,” he added.Wu said the mainland and Hong Kong regulators are discussing how to widen the cross-border trading connect scheme, including the real estate investment trust (REIT) connect and also the project for mainland investors to use yuan to trade Hong Kong-listed yuan shares via the connect scheme. The new futures contracts reported active turnover in early trading on Monday, according to data from Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX).“Today, we mark another important milestone with the launch of the only offshore China government bond futures,” HKEX chairman Carlson Tong Ka-shing said at the launch ceremony.
