The Ogun State Government has commenced a remediation exercise in Ogijo following investigations into alleged lead contamination linked to used lead-acid battery recycling facilities operating in the industrial community.
PUNCH Metro gathered in a statement on Sunday that the exercise followed a process audit of the recycling facilities and a series of tests on soil, water, air and residents’ blood samples to determine the extent of the alleged contamination.
Flagging off the exercise, the General Manager of the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency, Kehinde Bello, said the government had begun evacuating hazardous slag illegally dumped in communities surrounding the recycling facilities.
“The evacuation of this slag will take us weeks to complete because large quantities were illegally dumped in many communities around the ULAB facilities.
“The state government is determined to remove them in the overall public interest and for the well-being of residents,” Bello said.
